Today, POHD delivered five fishing boat engines to fishermen who lost everything right after the Tsunami hit. They gathered at the Penang Diocesan Centre in the afternoon after Razak informed them that the engines had arrived. The engines costing a total of RM26,950 (US7,092) were handed over by the Bishop of Penang Diocese, Bishop Anthony Selvanayagam D.D. and witnessed by Razak and Vincent. The fishermen were visibly moved when they received the keys to the engines for they now know for sure that they would be able to go back to sea and make a living for themselves and their families.

POHD also purchased 100 fishing nets at a cost of RM6,000 (US1,579).

The folks from Sinar Suria S/B and POHD rushed the paperwork with the Indonesian Consulate as many changes had to be made to the earlier documentation. It was tedious but Ms. Helena, 2nd Secretary of the Consulate were extremely friendly and cooperative. Thank you Helena!

At 12 noon, the Cipta Karya set sail. With this shipment, POHD has successfully shipped out all the aid it has received/purchased so far. It was tough but with the help of so many people and of course, God’s blessing, it was done. All of us heaved a huge sigh of relief as we saw the vessel sail away….

Meanwhile, we received word from Pujo (Forum LSM Aceh) that they had received the aid that was shipped out on Saturday on the Mitra Utama. They were elated and thanked everyone who made the shipment possible. They assured us the aid will be distributed to the various relief centres and villages as soon as possible.

The work does not end here. More aid must be purchased and sent. Nevertheless, we are now better positioned to do this as we have learned so much in the last 6 weeks.

Meanwhile, Vincent is back in Tg. Bungah gathering information, looking at quotation for fishing boats, net and engines and placing orders. He hopes to deliver some engines tomorrow.

The Cipta Karya begun its loading today at about 5pm and was completed at 11pm. Part of the warehouse did not have lighting and it was pitch dark. Vincent and Fr. Fabian had to borrow flashlights from the nearby police station and used that to help Micheal (forklift driver) navigate the forklift! It was a dangerous task with pallets, boxes and cartons littering the warehouse floor. Fortunately, everything went on well. 45 pallets of bottled water were stuffed into the vessel maximizing every possible space in it.
