Background

The F&L community in Penang was born in April 2002 at College General,
Penang under the auspices and guidance of the Penang Office for Human
Development (POHD). The community consist of about 25 members who
meet once a month to share their joys, pains and struggles.

The community has moved location several times since its birth.
It has moved from College General to Stella Maris followed by
The Penang Diocesan Centre. It then finally moved to the Church of the
Immaculate Conception. At gatherings, members talk, share, sing and dance.
Gatherings are planned by a commitee of 7 members who put togeher the
meeting using the F&L guidelines provided by Faith & Light International.

The community has had to face several challenges throughout the years
including fluctuating membership, inexperienced leadership and lack of
volunteers. But despite the challenges and obstacles, the community
has grown to love and care for each other in a deep way. The laughter
and joy that is experienced at gatherings are a testimony to the warmth
that has been generated in the community.

Of particular joy is the smiles and responses received from members
who are intellectually disabled. Although they appear not to be able
to perceive the realities around them, at F&L gatherings,
these beautiful and adorable members indeed respond by
smilling, shouting and even hugging spontaneously.
Such gestures go a long way in reminding us all that love goes
beyond the mind but is always felt in the heart.
