2009

As a parishioner of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Penang, I decided to join
in the Streetwalk activity organized by the parish as part of the Lenten Campaign.
This year, parishioners were flooded with numerous Lenten activities where they
can practice different ways of giving to be in solidarity with those who have no food.
Some parishioners pledged to fast, where the money saved from fasting went to
sponsor meals for the homeless. Some parishioners with culinary skills signed up to
cook the meals while others signed up to be part of the packing team and the
streetwalk team.
In three vans, about twenty of us began our streetwalk at 11pm. Our first stop was
the Komtar bus station and there we saw at least twenty homeless people sleeping
on the benches. A food set comprised a box of rice, a bottled water and a piece of
cake. Each volunteer was given two sets of food at a time to be given to the homeless.
Volunteers were encouraged to have short conversations with those they encountered
rather than just handing out food.
That night our team walked the streets of Georgetown for just over an hour but
distributed over 160 sets of food. We returned back to the Lent room in the parish
after the walk and shared our experiences and feelings. One person shared that she
never knew there were so many homeless people in Penang, while the most touching
story shared was about a father with a new born baby sleeping in the streets.
Three days were put aside for the street walk activity but response from the parishioners
was so overwhelming that organizers had to extend the streetwalk days.
Other activities were the sale of T-shirts to fund projects for the less fortunate,
blood donation, organ donation and clean up the environment.
