A colourfully decorated school bus bearing the powerful message of the Penang Diocesan
2009 Lenten Campaign ‘Don't Turn Your Back’ was driven into the church compound of
St Michael’s, Alor Setar after mass. Rev Fr. Jude Miranda called all parishioners to be involved
and not to turn their backs.
The virtue of RESPONSIBILITY was promoted this year besides the other objectives of
creating Awareness, Almsgiving & Outreach. Many events and activities were planned in
collaboration with the PHDC. A Recycling Campaign, a Colouring Contest, Recycleable
Product Model Construction and Craft were organized to create an awareness of nature.
Talks on the migrants, a,visit to an indigenous village in Bidor, a blood donation campaign,
a skit, video presentation and faith formation talks were planned for parishioners of all ages.
Catechism children were encouraged to set aside some of their pocket money for the less
fortunate. All parishioners were urged to participate and respond to this year’s Lenten
Campaign call.

On the second Sunday of Lent, the Love Squad members of OLOL,Ipoh presented a skit
for the parishioners in both the Tamil and English masses after the post communion prayer.
The objective of the skit was to create an awareness of the poor and marginalized. The
skit showed how people reacted towards others. When a beggar approached, they turned
away but when a pretty girl dropped something, they rushed to help. The message was
that we should not turn our backs on the poor and marginalized. There are other activities
planned for the parishioners during the Lenten season. One of the activities is painting and
decorating easter eggs by std 4,5, and 6 students. The eggs will be presented to the
Good Shepherd Home kids at a get together.
