SMC Lends A Hand

St. Michael’s Church (SMC) had its official launch of the 2008 Penang Diocesan Lenten
Campaign on Sunday 10 February. Parish Priest Fr. Michael Cheah was invited to be the
first person to affix his handprint and signature on the banner. Parishioners were then invited
to do the same under the guidance of the Love Squad members.
In addition to the launch event, the Love Squad also created a Powerpoint presentation about
the Lenten Campaign which was screened at all the weekend masses. Members were in
attendance to distribute the campaign envelopes, flyers and bookmarks to parishioners after
each mass.
To encourage a faith-filled Lent at SMC, the Love Squad has organised an action-packed
5 week programme for adults and children (all activities will stop during Holy Week).
One of the planned activities is a project for Sunday School children called
“The Love Offering” where the children are encouraged to foster a spirit of love and sacrifice
for the less fortunate. On Palm Sunday, the children will present their love offerings during
the morning English and Chinese masses.
Also during this season, the PHDC will be collaborating with the BEC Group to visit various
charity homes in

St Louis, Taiping Love Squad pledges 'Responsibility' this Lent

The Taiping Catholic Church launched her Lenten Campaign on 15th Feb.
The 20 member Love Squad comprising of youths from the three language
Youth Groups brought forth the Lenten message "Lend a Hand" through a
LCD slideshow. Besides the 3 objectives of Awareness, Out Reach and Almsgiving,
the Love Squad invites all parishioners; individuals and organizations to focus on
the virtue of Responsibility through out this Lenten season where we are called to
respond with compassion (Lk10:34) to seek, speak and act responsibly to oneself,
neighbours, society and nature. To put this virtue into action, 3 activities were planned.
Family Recycling Project, Health Care Awareness and Blood Donation Drive in
collaboration with the CNG and SDVP respectively. In bringing about this awareness
to the little children, the catechism teachers will give a 5 minute talk on the virtue of
Responsibility at the start of their lessons and at the same time the children will be
encouraged to make sacrifices by putting aside a bit of their pocket money into a coin
box in their classrooms. The money collected will then be placed in the Lenten Envelope
to be given at the end of the Season. The Love Squad will be moving out to all the outstation
chapels to distribute the flyers and bookmarks during their Masses so that everyone of
the Taiping Catholic Church will be aware of their Lenten commitment.
After Fr Stanley Antoni unfurled the Lenten Banner, 14 Love Squad members marched into
the church amidst an upbeat musci, each carrying a placard to form the word RESPONSIBILITY
to the applause of the congregation.
